Florida Health Insurance - How to File a Claim
Not all doctor’s offices and hospitals will file insurance claims for you. If you visit one that does not file insurance claims, then you will be responsible for doing so yourself so that you can be certain that your doctor has been paid properly. There are several steps to filing a claim on your health insurance company, but they are fairly simple. By following these directions, you should be able to get your claim filed with as little frustration as possible.
Get an Itemized Bill From Your Doctor
When you are leaving your doctor’s office, be sure to ask him or her for an itemized bill that includes all of the services that you received. You will need this itemized bill in order to correctly fill out your claim. You should also make at least two copies of the bill so that you will be certain to have them if you need them at a later date. Put one in your files and keep the other on hand with the original so that you can look at it when you need to. You will need to attach the original bill to your claim, so remember that you will not be able to keep it.
Contact Your Insurance Company for Claim Forms
You probably do not already have claim forms from your insurance company, so you should contact them and ask for some. Once you have the claim form, you should be able to begin the process of getting your doctor paid. Most claim forms are pretty easy to follow. The directions should either be printed directly on the form or on a separate sheet that accompanies the form. It is very important that you fill out the form correctly, so call your insurance company if you have any questions at all. Filling out your claim form improperly could result in significant delays in getting your money from the insurance company, so it is best to be cautious and ask if you are uncertain about anything.
Double Check and Make Copies of Everything
Before you send in your insurance claim, be sure to go over everything again and double check the information you put on the forms. If you have made any mistakes, this is your last opportunity to catch them before sending the forms to the insurance company. Also make sure that you have included the original itemized bill. Once you are certain that you have followed all of the directions perfectly, make copies of everything. You should already have copies of the itemized bill, so you don’t have to worry about that, but be certain that you make a copy of the claim form that you have filled out as well as any other documents that the insurance company or doctor’s office might have sent you. Having these duplicates will make it much easier for you to get your money if the insurance company makes a mistake filing your claim.
Filing a claim on your health insurance doesn’t have to be a difficult process. By making sure that you follow all of the directions, you should be able to receive the money for your doctor bill within a short amount of time.
